HIGHLIGHTS

  • Xiaomi may be launching its foldable phone by Q2 of 2019.
  • The Xiaomi foldable phone will cost half of Samsung Galaxy Fold.
  • Xiaomi's foldable phone may either be called Mi Fold or Mi Flex.
The year 2019 is all about foldable phones and 5G network. Even in Mobile World Congress 2019, most smartphone makers talked about their respective foldable phones and coming of 5G network. Two companies -- Samsung and Huawei --launched their foldable phones Galaxy Fold and Mate X at MWC 2019. Last month even Xiaomi announced to launch a foldable phone. The company released a video showing the unfinished foldable phone from all sides. A new report suggests that the Xiaomi foldable phone will launch in Q2 of 2019. More details of the foldable phone have been revealed.
Samsung launched the Galaxy Fold alongside the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e last month at an Unpacked event in San Francisco. The Galaxy Fold was launched for a price tag of Rs $1980, which roughly translates to Rs 1.4 lakh. A report coming from iGyaan suggests that Xiaomi's foldable smartphone will be priced around $999 in the U.S and 999 in Europe, which means that the foldable phone will be priced around Rs 74,999 in India. As of now, there are no words whether the Xiaomi foldable will come to India or not. Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy Fold will come to India soon, but the South Korean smartphone maker is yet to provide an exact date of launch.
Considering the price of the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the expected price of Xiaomi foldable phone it is clear that Huawei Mate X is the most expensive foldable phone available so far. Launched at MWC 2019 the Huawei Mate X costs around $2,600. Xiaomi's foldable phone may either be called Mi Fold or Mi Flex. If not these Xiaomi is also asking fans to suggest a name for the foldable phone.
Last week Xiaomi's foldable phone was leaked in a concept video showing the handset from all angles. The video shows the foldable phone with a bezel-less screen with a punch hole on the top of the display. The punch hole embeds the selfie camera which will also work as face unlock. The video also shows the foldable phone with triple cameras on the rear panel where one will be the normal camera, the second one will be dedicated to click portrait pictures, while the third one will most likely be for ultra-video shots.
The video re-confirms that the Xiaomi foldable phone will come with a dual fold screen, which the company officially revealed last month. On folding the screen on both sides the device turns into a smartphone. On opening the folds it can be used as a tablet. Rumours suggest that when folded the screen of the foldable phone will measure 6.5-inches. While when the folds are open screen size will increase to 10-inches. The Xiaomi foldable phone is tipped to be powered by Snapdragon 855 chipset. As of now, there are no reports whether the Xiaomi foldable phone use X50 modem for 5G support like Huawei Mate X or X24 modem like the Samsung Galaxy Fold. On the software front, the foldable phone from Xiaomi is said to run Android 9 Pie based on MIUI 10.
