Google on Tuesday launched its cloud-based game streaming service, dubbed as the Google Stadia, on the sidelines of the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2019 in San Francisco, United States. The company's gaming service was introduced by the company's chief executive Sundar Pichai during a Google keynote address at the company's maiden appearance at the event.
The newly launched service -- Google Stadia -- will utilise the company's cloud technology and its network of data centers to enable users to play games via their web browsers or even YouTube without waiting for the game to be downloaded on to a device - a smartphone, a personal computer or a gaming console - making the entire gaming experience as swift and easy as watching a video online. This means that to play a game, say Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Stadia players will have to click on just one button -- "play now" and seconds later, they would be running around ancient Greece in game.
As Googgle explains it, Stadia players would require no downloads, no updates, no patches and no installs to play games using the company's newly announced service.
"Stadia is a new video game platform, delivering instant access to your favorite games on any type of screen-whether it's a TV, laptop, desktop, tablet or mobile phone. Our goal is to make those games available in resolutions up to 4K and 60 frames per second with HDR and surround sound," vice president and GM, Google Stadia, Phil Harrison, wrote in a blog post.
Apart from launching the cloud-based game streaming service, Google also launched a gaming console - the Stadia Controller - that will allow Stadia users to get the best of the company's gaming service. It includes a host of buttons that are designed to enhance a gamer's overall experience. For example, there is a button for instant capture. There is also a button for saving and sharing gameplay in up to 4k of stunning resolution. And what is a device by Google if it isn't smart? And so, The Stadia Controller, like all of Google's other devices features support for a Google Assistant button. It also has a built-in microphone that would enable the Google Assistant to work without a hitch.
Notably, while there is no word on the pricing or availability yet, but Harrison said that Google Sadia will be available in select countries including the US, Canada, UK and much of Europe later this year. As far as India is concerned, there is no word on when the service will arrive in India yet.
