HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rishabh Pant was taunted by Mohali crowd with chants of 'Dhoni, Dhoni'
  • Suniel Shetty backed Pant and asked people to evaluate what they were doing at the age of 21
  • Shikhar Dhawan also said it was unfair to compare Pant to MS Dhoni
Rishabh Pant was subjected to 'Dhoni, Dhoni' chants in Mohali during the fourth one-day international between India and Australia after he missed a couple of stumping chances. Pant's glovework was surely lacking the skill and speed of MS Dhoni but the chants of Dhoni was unfair to them, many thought.
Pant is a work-in-progress when it comes to wicketkeeping. However, he is a decent batsman and that was visible in Mohali. He hit the ball well and scored 36 off 24, including four fours and a six.
"They're missing MSD (Dhoni)," one commentator said, as quoted by Fox Sports.
"It's a little unfair on the young kid," another commentator said.
"They're chanting 'Dhoni' every time he (Pant) misses a bit from behind the stumps. That's really hard and unfair from the crowd."
Actor Suniel Shetty has now come out in support of Pant and asked people to introspect what they were doing at the age of 21 and that Pant is representing India in all the three formats.
Earlier, even Aakash Chopra spoke in favour of Pant and asked people to stop searching for Dhoni in the youngster.
Shikhar Dhawan has also backed Pant, saying it's unfair to compare him to MS Dhoni and that the young wicketkeeper-batsman should be given more time to find his feet in international cricket.
"Rishabh is a young bloke and like any other youngster, you have to give time to him. Rishabh is still finding his feet. You cannot compare Pant to Dhoni [bhai], given the experience he has having played over the years," Dhawan told the media in Mohali.
He added: "Of course, had the stumping chance been taken, it could have turned the game. Having said that, the game slipped away from out hands quite quickly after that. The dew also played its part n the game. But that's what it is."
