2019 has just taken off and Android Q is already here. Surely, it’s not the stable version right now but the first beta update already has a lot to reveal what we could see in the final stable version later in the year. So far, we know that Android Q will be primarily focusing on privacy enhancements and cosmetic changes will be kept to a bare minimum. However, Google will refine all the irregularities that Android Pie had, starting with the gesture navigation.
Android Pie introduced gesture navigation after other manufacturers started implementing their own iterations. However, Google's implementation wasn't perfect compared to what OnePlus, Xiaomi or Apple did. It seems like Google is borrowing some ideas from Apple's system and will bring it with Android Q.
The new gesture navigation can be used by enabling the developer options in Pixel launcher. Spotted first by XDA Developers, the new navigation system introduces more intuitive gestures to make sure that navigation feels more seamless than what it used to feel on Android Pie.
You can now swipe right on the navigation bar pill to access recently used apps. One can switch apps by performing left-to-right gestures from anywhere on the navigation bar. The Recents view now also shows apps in fullscreen mode instead of a zoomed-out mode.
Since this is still in beta mode, there are bugs. Developers have reported that the gestures aren't smooth completely and some transition ls are jittery. Therefore, using it on a regular basis might be difficult for now.
That said, these bugs will surely be ironed out over the course of time. The new gesture navigation sounds promising and it could change the way we use Android phones.
