Xiaomi launched the Mi 9 for the global market on Sunday afternoon at the Mobile World Congress 2019 event. With the Mi 9 Xiaomi is taking the smartphone experience to the whole new level, especially in terms of cameras. The Mi 9 includes three cameras on the back and single on the front that sits on the tiny waterdrop notch. DxoMark previously revealed that the Mi 9 is the third best phone camera in the world right now to capture still shots. In fact, the report suggested that the Mi 9 is better than the Google Pixel phones in clicking still photos. DxoMark now reveals the video scores of the Mi 9, and the results are surprising.
For the videos, the Mi 9 manages to score 99 points in DxoMark, which is higher than even the iPhone XS Max and Google Pixel 2. The DxoMark score reveals that the Xiaomi Mi 9 has the best -- better than Pixels, iPhones or any other Android phones -- phone camera in the world right now to shoot videos. According to DxoMark in videos Google Pixel 3 scores 98 points while the iPhone XS Max manages to get 96 points.
The DxoMark report notes, "At 99 points, the Xiaomi Mi 9 achieves the best score for Video we have seen so far, making it the current go-to device for mobile videographers. The overall video score is derived from a number of sub-scores in the same way as the Photo score: Exposure (85), Color (91), Autofocus (94), Texture (70), Noise (78), Artifacts (80), and Stabilization (92)."
The report further notes that the credit for Mi 9's high video score goes to phone's ability to record 4K resolution videos by default. "This gives the device a distinct advantage in the texture and detail department. The DxoMark report reveals that the Mi 9 is capable of capturing very good texture in bright light in the video mode. "Detail levels reduce with light levels, but the camera still captures good textures under interior lighting, and edge detail is consistently good down to low light. Overall, the Mi 9 is the best phone for video texture we have tested so far," the report notes.
The report further notes that "the Mi 9 is also the currently best device in terms of texture/noise balance." Reportedly the Mi 9 camera manages to capture excellent video detail, and also keeps noise low across most illumination levels. However, the report notes that "noise becomes more visible in low light, however, especially on moving subjects in the scene."
DxoMark notes, "The Mi 9 is also our top device for video colour, thanks to generally pleasant colour rendering in all situations and no colour shading. Occasionally we observed a bluish cast in the shadow regions of video frames, but that's only a very minor issue. White balance transitions under changing light sources are fine as well, with only some slight stepping under indoor lighting." It further notes that, "Target exposure is very good, even in low light, and transitions are smooth. Dynamic range is somewhat limited, but the Mi 9 has that in common with most of its direct competitors and overall, only the Apple iPhone XS Max with its HDR video algorithm achieves a better dynamic range in video mode."
