Four soldiers, including a Major-rank officer, have been killed in an encounter in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter took place in Pinglan (also spelt as Pinglena) village of Pulwama. Besies this, another jawan is said to be injured and a civilian has been killed in the gunbattle.
The encounter broke out on Monday morning in South Kashmir's Pulwama district after the Pakistan-based outfit's Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militants fired upon security forces.
Two terrorists were cornered by security forces, news agency ANI reported. The terrorists were believed to have links with Adil Ahmad Dar, the JeM suicide bomber involved in the Pulwama terror attack that killed 40 CRPF jawans on February 14.
Reports said a joint team of Indian Army's 55 Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF and Special Operation Group launched a cordon in the wee hours on Monday.
A police officer told India Today TV that the cordon was laid in the area following credible inputs about the presence of some militants.
As the joint operation team intensified the searches and fired some warning shots towards the suspected spot, the militants opened fire and a gunfight followed
During the course of the gunfight, four soldiers, including a Major were killed.
The Army officer is identified as Major DS Dondial. Other soldiers killed are Head Constable Save Ram, Sepoy Ajay Kumar and Sepoy Hari Singh. A civilian, Mushtaq Ahmad, was also killed in the gunfight.
At the time of filling this report, the search operations were on in the area to trace the militants. Mobile internet services have been suspended in the region.
Meanwhile, curfew remains imposed in Jammu citty as a precautionary measure.
On February 14, 40 CRPF personnel were killed after Dar rammed an explosive laden car into a vehicle in a CRPF convoy in Pulwama district.
While 40 CRPF jawans were killed in the attack, several injured personnel continue to battle for their lives.
The Pulwama terror attack evoked nationwide outrage. After the encounter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country is going through a phase of mourning but a befitting reply will be given to those behind the dastardly attack.
