Google honoured legendary Indian actor Madhubala with a stunning doodle today on her 86th birthday.
Popularly known through generations for her beauty and sensitive portrayal of women in films, Madhubala came to be known as The Beauty with Tragedy and The Venus of Indian cinema.
Her beauty and elegance was often even compared with Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe and thus she was also called as the Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood.
Born in Delhi on February 14, 1933 as Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi, Madhubala was raised in the slums of Bombay. She even started supporting her family from a very young age as a child star.
She started her career in the Hindi film industry with a minor role at the age of 9 in the film Basant in 1942. However, she was first noticed on the big screen when she made her debut in 1947 with Raj Kapoor in Neel Kamal at the age of 14.
She also caught the interest of Hollywood, when ace photographer James Burke visited India and photographed her for Life Magazine.
Her work and beauty was not only recognized back home, but also all over the world. She was given the title of The Biggest Star in the World in 1952 by Theatre Arts magazine.
Her life was even commemorated by a postage stamp in India in 2008.
Her chemistry with Dilip Kumar in the unforgettable drama Mughal-e-Azam is one of the most popular movies of Bollywood. In fact, she even fell in love with the actor, but her father interfered in the relationship.
Her short and tragic career, which marked her role in over 70 films, was cut short after her sudden death on 3 February, 1969 due to prolonged illness.
Madhubala died at a young age of 36.
