Madhuri Dixit on stepping into Sridevi's shoes for Kalank: It was so shocking

aran Johar was looking forward to working with Sridevi in his ambitious production, Kalank. However, after the legendary actress's untimely demise in February last year, Madhuri Dixit stepped into her shoes.
In an interview with PTI, Madhuri revealed that it took a long time for her to come to terms with the tragic news that Sridevi had passed away. "What took time was to digest the whole thing that had happened. It was so shocking, I was like 'you want me to do this role?' because even they (filmmakers) were stuck. They had to go on," she said.
"As a person it was hard to deal. As an actor, you know the role, the script. It's a different matter altogether. But to accept the truth was very difficult," she added.
Speculation is rife that Madhuri will be seen playing a courtesan in Kalank, which also features Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur in pivotal roles.
Kalank was conceptualised a decade and a half ago, and Karan's father, the late Yash Johar, was supposed to direct the film. Pre-production had begun, but it got shelved.
Now, Karan has handed over the baton to filmmaker Abhishek Varman. "I am now proud to pass it on to the extremely capable and visionary hands of director Abhishek Varman. Kalank has a beautifully structured story by Shibani Bathija and an exceptionally fluid narrative and screenplay by Abhishek," Karan said in a statement.
Kalank is scheduled to open in theatres on April 19.
