The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an interim application in the Supreme Court seeking directions to the West Bengal government and police to cooperate with its investigation of the Saradha chit fund cases.
The application specifically named Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar. The Supreme Court will hear the plea tomorrow.
The CBI has also filed a contempt case against the Mamata Banerjee administration and the state police for failing to follow previous Supreme Court orders.
The plea said Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar was served with summons multiple times, but failed to respond and created obstacles in the investigation.
The CBI's plea sought a direction to Rajeev Shukla to "faithfully cooperate with the investigation agency".
There has been high drama in West Bengal ever since a 40-member CBI team tried to enter Rajeev Kumar's house on Sunday evening to question him in connection with the Saradha chit fund cases.
Rajeev Kumar is alleged to have destroyed evidence.
The Supreme Court said today that the CBI was permitted to bring material on record to support its claim that the police commissioner was trying to destroy evidence.
"If Kolkata Police Commissioner even remotely thinks of destroying evidence, bring the material before this Court. We will come down so heavily on him that he will regret," said Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
'WORSE THAN EMERGENCY'
The CBI's surprise visit sparked a face-off between the West Bengal Police and the investigation agency. CBI officials were briefly detained.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who travelled to Rajeev Kumar's home soon after the CBI team's visit, accused the Narendra Modi government of trying to malign her because she organised a mega-opposition rally earlier this month.
She described the situation as "worse than an emergency".
