Meizu Zero is the world's first holeless smartphone

Meizu Zero

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Zero achieve a seamless design with help of a ceramic body.
  • The Zero relies on wireless charging solely to get the battery juiced up.
  • The Zero has no power and volume buttons.
Since 2019 began, we have been seeing a new trend amongst smartphone manufacturers. Major names from China are trying to move towards the next dimension in the world of smartphones - a smartphone that is perfect from every angle. Vivo was the first one to break in with their Waterdrop concept. The Waterdrop concept or Apex 2019 is supposed to be a smartphone that's one continuous slab of either metal, glass or ceramic. While Vivo's concept still raises certain questions, Meizu has already come up with what it thinks is the next major step in smartphone design with the Meizu Zero.
The Meizu Zero is the first smartphone that has no ports and holes in the body. Instead, the device relies on wireless technologies to make it seem like a single slab glass and metal. In fact, Meizu states it as the world's first seamless, uninterrupted phone. The Zero has no lines, no ports - not a single interruption in its design.
While removing all ports sounds easy to get a seamless design, Meizu had to make a lot of changes to the basic features of the device.

Meizu Zero: What's unique

--There are no volume or power buttons. Instead, there are capacitive sensors on the edges, like the HTC U12+. These sensors replicate volume buttons and the power button.
--The Zero has no speakers or grilles. Instead, it relies on piezoelectric transducers and use the screen to transmit audio. This technology was used on the first generation Xiaomi Mi Mix. Therefore, the screen will vibrate to act either as an earpiece or the loudspeaker.
--The Zero gives up the charging port. Instead, it relies on wireless charging solely to get the battery juiced up. Meizu has built-in support for 18W fast wireless charging, which is faster than Huawei's 15W wireless charging system.
--The Zero also skips on SIM card slots. Instead, the Zero relies on eSIM technology. This makes the Meizu Zero only valid for those markets where carriers have support for eSIM connectivity.
--The Zero achieve a seamless design with help of a ceramic body.
However, the Meizu Zero also relies on certain conventional technologies. The Zero, like the 16th, has a no-notch display. A very slim forehead and chin are there for achieving a uniform design. There's a 5.99-inch OLED display with an in-display fingerprint scanner. The display curves toward the edges. Meizu has relied on the last year's Snapdragon 845 chip with LPDDR4X RAM. For the cameras, there's a pair of Sony's IMX380 + IMX350 dual camera setup while the front has a 20-megapixel selfie camera. The Zero also gets support for IP68 water and dust resistance.
Meizu claims that the device has been under development for almost two years now. Meizu terms the Zero as a concept device for now.
