After losing four of its Rajya Sabha MPs to the BJP, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) suffered another blow after its senior leader Ambika Krishna joined the saffron party.
Film producer Ambika Krishna is former MLA from Eluru.
The party seems to be facing its worse crisis with majority of its MLAs considering say goodbye to TDP.
With BJP having zero MLA or MP in Andhra Pradesh, it is likely to emerge as the principal opposition in the legislative assembly of the state with two-third of the party MLAs switching the side.
TDP has 23 MLAs in 175 member assembly while Congress and BJP did not get a single seat.
Sources say under the leadership of MLA Ganta Srinivas, who has been a Congress and later a TDP minister, he is talking to 14 MLAs who are considering joining the saffron party.
However, Ganta Srinivas told India Today that he was a TDP MLA and will continue to remain with the party.
BJP is in talks with those TDP leaders who are angry with Chandrababu Naidu as they blame him for the electoral defeat. Apart from this, many leaders believe that Chandrababu made the biggest mistake by opting out of the NDA.
With an eye on 2024, BJP is busy getting strong TDP leaders on its side.
BJP is also putting a special focus on the Kapu community which comprises around 18% of the population with the Reddy community being their political rivals.
The Reddy community was once considered as a strong vote bank of Congress which has now joined the YSR Congress. Kapu, meanwhile, was the original vote bank of TDP. Sources say the party is also in touch with megastar Chiranjeevi, brother of Jansen chief and actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan.
Prior to the Lok Sabha elections, former minister Kanna Lakshmi Narayan, a Kapu leader, as the party's Andhra Pradesh president.
