  • Rahul Gandhi had attributed the chowkidar chor hai remark to Supreme Court
Rahul Gandhi has now extended an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court for attributing his "chowkidar chor hai" jibe to the court after its Rafale judgment.
Rahul Gandhi has filed a fresh affidavit with unconditional apology to the Supreme Court in a contempt of court case against him.
The affidavit states, "Unconditional apology to the Supreme Court for unintentionally and inadvertently linking SC order in Rafale review plea to his "cowkidar chor hai" political jibe against PM Narendra Modi."
Rahul Gandhi has said he holds the Supreme Court in "highest esteem" and has sought closure of contempt proceedings against him.
The affidavit says, "Deponent unconditionally apologises for the wrongful attributions to this Hon'ble Court. The Deponent further states that any such attributions were entirely unintentional, non-willful and inadvertent."
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had filed affidavits saying he "regrets" making the said comments against the Supreme Court. However, a Supreme Court bench led by CJI Ranjan Gogoi asked for his complete apology for misquoting the apex court.
During the previous hearing, Rahul Gandhi's counsel, Abhishek Manu Singhvi said on behalf of the Congress leader, "I have expressed regret. That is the same as an apology. There cannot be any doubt on my statement."
A few days ago, Rahul Gandhi addressed the media and said he had made a mistake and apologized to the Supreme Court, but not to PM Modi or BJP.
He also said that him and Congress will continue with the chowkidar chor hai campaign against PM Modi.
The Supreme Court is hearing the contempt of court case based on a petition filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi.
