Are you the PM of India or Gujarat? Congress targets PM Modi over Gujarat storm tweet
Prime Minister Narendra Modi

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Over 30 people died in various parts of the country
  • An ex- gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those who lost their lives has been announced
  • Congress leaders accused the Prime Minister of being partial to Gujarat
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (April 17) expressed anguish over the loss of lives in various parts of Gujarat due to unseasonal rain. "Authorities are monitoring the situation very closely. All possible assistance is being given to those affected," he tweeted. The Congress, however, cornered PM Modi over Gujarat-specific tweet saying he should act as the prime minister of the country and not be partial to Gujarat.
In another tweet, the prime minister's office had announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to unseasonal rain and storm in various parts of Gujarat.

These tweets were not well-received by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath who said that loss of lives also took place in Madhya Pradesh which is under the Congress rule. He said that even though the state does not have a Bharatiya Janata Party government, the Prime Minister should have extended his condolences to those who fell victims to the unseasonal rail there.
Congress leader Digvijaya Singh also slammed the Prime Minister and accused him of being partial to Gujarat as no relief fund was announced for the victims in Madhya Pradesh.
However, after Congress leaders accused him of being partial to Gujarat, the Prime Minister’s office tweeted announcement of relief fund for all victims in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Manipur and other parts which were affected.
"PM @narendramodi has expressed grief at the loss of lives due to unseasonal rains and storms in MP, Rajasthan, Manipur & various parts of the country. The government is doing its best to provide all possible assistance to those affected. The situation is being monitored closely, the tweet read, followed by another tweet about announcement of ex gratia." It added, "An ex- gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to unseasonal rain & storms in MP, Rajasthan, Manipur & various parts of the country has been approved from the PM’s National Relief Fund. Rs 50,000 each for the injured has also been approved."
A dust storm Tuesday damaged part of a tent being erected for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's April 17 rally in Himmatnagar town in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat.
Over 30 people from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat have lost their lives. At least 10 people have died in Madhya Pradesh.
