South African batting great Hashim Amla on Thursday announced his retirement from international cricket.
Amla, 36, hit 55 international centuries, including South Africa's highest Test score when he made 311 not out against England at The Oval in 2012.
Cricket South Africa took to Twitter to announce the news. “#BreakingNews @amlahash today called time on one of the great international careers of the modern era when he announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket. He will continue to be available for domestic cricket as well as the Mzansi Super League. #AmlaRetires”
He was the second major South African player in three days to announce his retirement, following fast bowler Dale Steyn's announcement on Monday that he was quitting Test cricket. Steyn will continue to be available for limited-overs internationals.
An elegant right-handed top-order batsman, Amla hit 9,282 runs at an average of 46.64 in 124 Test matches and 8,113 at 49.46 in 181 one-day internationals.
He hit 28 centuries in Tests and 27 in ODIs. His Test tally included four double centuries.
Amla was appointed Test captain in 2014 but gave it up during England's tour of South Africa at the beginning of 2016 as it was affecting his form.
"Firstly, all Glory and thanks to the Almighty for granting me this Proteas journey which has been nothing but a joy and privilege," Amla said in a statement. "I learnt many lessons during this incredible ride, made many friends and most importantly shared in the love of a brotherhood called #proteafire.
"I would like to thank my parents for their prayers, love and support, it is their shadow over me that enabled me to play for years under the Protea sun. Also, my family, friends and agent, my team mates and every member of the support staff throughout this incredible journey. A heartfelt thank you to every one of you!
"The fans for energizing me when times were tough, and for celebrating with me when we succeeded together. Siyabonga South Africa!
"And, of course, a very special thanks to the President and the Board at Cricket South Africa - not forgetting the Chief Executive, Mr Thabang Moroe, and his administrative team. I really appreciate all the opportunities and am truly grateful.
"Love and peace."
CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe said, “It is always sad to bid farewell to one of the true legends of the game, but at the same time this is rather an occasion to celebrate the richness that Hashim has brought to the game around the world both on and off the field."
