In a relief to former Union Minister P. Chidambaram, the Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to send him Tihar jail and extended his CBI custody till September 5 in the INX Media corruption case. The CBI had informed in the apex court on Tuesday that it does not want any further custody of the Congress leader and he should be sent to Tihar under judicial custody.
However, extending Chidambaram's CBI custody, the Supreme Court said it did not wish to take up the case on Tuesday. "We are conscious that we should not usurp the jurisdiction of the concerned trial court. The matter will be taken up on September 5," it said. The court also asked Chidambaram's counsel not to press for the interim bail plea that they had filed in the trial court till September 5.
A bench of justices R Banumathi and A S Bopanna said it would on September 5 hear Chidambaram's plea in which he has challenged the non-bailable warrant issued against him as well as the subsequent trial court's orders remanding him in the CBI custody.
Chidamabaram has been in CBI custody from August 21. On Monday, the former finance minister was sent to one more day of CBI custody by a Delhi court. The court said it was passing the order keeping in view the observations made earlier in the day by the Supreme Court which asked the trial court to extend Chidamabaram's CBI custody by a day.
Chidambaram, after expiry of his three-day CBI custody granted on August 30, was produced before Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar.
